General info

Straddling the border between Montenegro and Albania, Skadar Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. Two-thirds of the lake belong to Montenegro, and thanks to its location, it is a home to a vast number of wildlife species, with the largest bird reserve in Europe.

The lake is known for being the last remaining breeding ground of the endangered Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant. It’s also a key resting place for birds migrating from northern Europe to Africa.

Grmozur is the island closest to Virpazar and the fortress was built by the Ottomans in 1843. This small, rocky island used to serve as an exile for political prisoners with only one person known to have escaped the island giving Grmozur its nickname the Montenegrin Alcatraz. The area was also known as Snake Island, once having been a haven for snakes! Today, you won’t find any prisoners or snakes (thankfully!), but birdwatchers and tourists. It has become a favorite spot for lovers of nature and wildlife.
