Zabljak
Žabljak

From Kotor, the tour heads towards Žabljak – the center of winter tourism in Montenegro, but a destination that is becoming more and more popular in the summer season. Žabljak is well visited due to various reasons. It is situated in a scenic mountain valley, surrounded by towering peaks and pristine lakes, making it an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of Durmitor National Park. Žabljak offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, quad tours and mountain biking, making it a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts, but also those who love good food. Moreover, Žabljak is the highest urban settlement in the Balkans located at 1456 m above sea level. From Kotor we need around 3 hours to reach Žabljak.

On arrival to Žabljak, we enter the Durmitor National Park and take a walk to it’s symbol – The Black Lake, a glacial lake surrounded by majestic peaks and lush forests. No visit to Durmitor is complete without a stop at the famous Black Lake, well known as one of the various glacial lakes of Durmitor called “gorske oči” which can be translated as mountain eyes.

The lake’s dark, almost black, waters are due to the peat and plants that grow at the bottom of the lake, giving it its unique appearance. The lake is also a popular spot for swimming and picnicking, and its shallow waters make it a safe place for families with young children. In addition to its beauty, Black Lake is also an important habitat for many species of wildlife, including fish, birds, and mammals, and is a popular starting point for many hiking trails.

We are going to explore the 3.5 km educational trail around the Black Lake, a light hike that will take between 1-1.30 hours depending on the walking speed and photo breaks. The trail winds around the lake and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the local flora, fauna, and geology. The trail is well-marked and includes informative signs and viewpoints overlooking the lake. The educational trail around the Black Lake is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels but we sure to bring proper outdoor shoes. After we finish the hike, you will have some free time to visit the nearby souvenir shop or have a drink.

It’s time for a short 30 minutes drive to our last attraction, but probably the most amazing one – Tara River Canyon. The Canyon is the second deepest in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States, reaching a depth of over 1,300 meters. The Tara Canyon is home to a unique ecosystem, including a variety of plant and animal species that are not found anywhere else in the world, which is the main reason why it is under UNESCO protection as a biosphere reserve.

We arrive at the notable Đurđevića Tara bridge offering panoramic views of the stunning Tara canyon. This bridge is one of the most visited landmarks of Montenegro for various reasons. First. because of its distinctive and aesthetically pleasing design with outstanding views over the Tara canyon. The bridge is the main starting point for rafting and kayaking expeditions along the Tara River, and is also a popular destination for bungee jumping and other adrenaline-fueled activities. Secondly, its historical significance and interesting background attract a lot of visitors every year.

After being completed, 172 meters above the Tara River, this bridge was the largest traffic concrete bridge in Europe at that time. It is often included in the list of the 10 most beautiful bridges on the planet. During the Second World War, in order to prevent enemy units from crossing into Montenegro in 1942, the partisans demolished one arch of the bridge but it was reconstructed later in 1986.

Here, on the monumental Đurđevića Tara bridge you will have a 30 minutes break to enjoy the stunning views, take photos or test your bravery by trying the zip line above Tara canyon. The zip line is an additional option, only for those who are ready for the longest zip line in Europe! The flight above the “Tear of Europe” lasts around 2.5 minutes (90km/h).
