Overview of the tour

Part 1 - Visit to Besac Fortress

Our first point of visit is Virpazar, the "center" of Skadar lake National Park. We take a walk to Besac Fortress, built by Turks in 1478. Besac Fortress is a cultural and historical site of exceptional importance and one of the most attractive lookouts on Skadar Lake. This is one of the oldest military fortifications preserved on the territory of today's Montenegro. This place was used as a prison by occupying Italians in Second World War, and has been restored in 2013.

Part 2 - Boat ride across the biggest lake in Balkan

The trip heads to Skadar lake, the biggest lake on Balkan peninsula, where we take a boat ride to Kom Monastery. On the way to this XV century monastery we get the chance to explore the wild beauty of Skadar lake, see fishing villages, lotus flower channels and much more! Skadar lake is famous for being the last remaining breeding ground of the endangered Dalmatian Pelican and Pygmy Cormorant. It is also a key resting place for birds migrating from northern Europe to Africa. The Kom Monastery, built between 1415 and 1427, has some of the oldest frescoes in Montenegro.

Part 3 - Wine tasting

After the boat tour it is time for some good food and wine. We head to a local family-run winery with a long wine-making tradition, to try local wines and Montenegrin cuisine. You will learn about Montenegrin indigenous grape varieties, family traditions and life in this well known wine region.

Part 4 - Rijeka Crnojevića, the "Montenegrin Venice"

On the way to the entrance to Rijeka Crnojevića, there is a fantastic view of the river of the same name, and a little further on Lake Skadar. The beginning of the story is linked to the ruler of Zeta, Ivan Crnojević, who in the XV century, in order to avoid the Turkish army, built a fortress and a monastery on Obod, whose church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. There he transferred his capital from Žabljak Crnojevića, and the monastery became the seat of the Zeta Metropolis. Here we can find the remains of historical buildings from the time of Ivan Crnojević, such as the basement room which is connected to the work of the Obod printing house, where the first Cyrillic book "Octoich prvoglasnik" was printed in 1494. In addition, the first pharmacy in Montenegro was opened here, as well as the first weapons workshop. During the XIX and early XX centuries, Rijeka Crnojevića was the largest Montenegrin port and a leading trade center.

Part 5 - Pavlova strana viewpoint

We start our departure by passing along the most famous viewpoint in Skadar lake region -  Pavlova Strana (the side of Pavle). You will recognize this fantastic landscape from numerous postcards. This viewpoint owes its thanks to the Crnojević river, which meanders here and merges with Skadar Lake. After a photo break, we continue our way back to Podgorica.
