Visit the clearest, most beautiful, wild mountain river in Montenegro – known as the ’Tear of Europe’ for its purity. The Tara’s source at the foot of the Komovi mountains (1,250m) moves northeastward to emerge through the canyon at Scepan Polje (433m) meeting with the Piva River to form the Drina, one of the longest rivers of southeastern Europe.
The Tara River Canyon is up to 1,330m deep, making it the deepest canyon in Europe and second deepest in the world, after Colorado. For the most part, it is located in Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and a geological, hydrological and biological phenomenon.
Tara is also Europe’s last remaining unpolluted river, allowing adventurers to drink from it freely as they descend its rapids. Some of the most spectacular experiences of the canyon include sunrise with the sunshine breaking through the cracks in the rugged, rocky landscape, and narrow snippets of starry sky to be observed from below by campers.
