General info

Hardly anyone would guess that Piva Lake is artificial. Surrounded by steep mountains and deep canyons, it looks completely natural — yet this impressive lake was created in 1976 for the needs of the Piva Hydroelectric Power Plant, after the Piva Canyon was dammed. Covering an area of 12.5 km² and stretching up to 45 km in length, Piva Lake is today the largest artificial lake in Montenegro.

With the creation of the lake, a new town of Plužine was built and the residents moved from the old settlement, which now lies beneath the water. Almost all buildings were removed before the flooding, but one historic treasure was saved — the Piva Monastery (built between 1573 and 1586). In an extraordinary project, the monastery was relocated stone by stone over a period of 13 years to a higher location, preserving one of Montenegro’s most important cultural landmarks.

Today, Piva Lake is a peaceful destination known for its emerald-blue water and breathtaking scenery. Piva boat tours offer a relaxing cruise across the lake, with swimming stops and a visit to a hidden cave, making it a perfect experience for nature lovers and those looking to enjoy Montenegro’s quieter, untouched side.
