General info

Visit the clearest, most beautiful, wild mountain river in Montenegro – known as the ’Tear of Europe’ for its purity. The Tara’s source at the foot of the Komovi moutains (1,250m) moves northeastward to emerge through the canyon at Scepan Polje (433m), meeting with the Piva River to form the Drina, one of the longest rivers of southeastern Europe.

The Tara River Canyon is up to 1,330m deep, making it the deepest canyon in Europe and second deepest in the world, after Colorado. For the most part, it is located in Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and a geological, hydrological and biological phenomenon.

Tara is also Europe’s last remaining unpolluted river, allowing adventurers to drink from it freely as they descend its rapids. Some of the most spectacular experiences of the canyon include sunrise with the sunshine breaking through the cracks in the rugged, rocky landscape, and narrow snippets of starry sky to be observed from below by campers.

The most attractive part of the canyon, from Sljivansko to Scepan Polje, is abundant with rapids (over 50), wild tributaries, glistening waterfalls, and lush forests whose trees are several hundred years old, reaching up to 50m in height.

Overview of the tour

An early 9am start at Blue River Tara rafting camp, Scepan Polje, gives us time to meet our skippers and other rafters over a rich breakfast at a riverfront restaurant. At around 10:30am, we prepare our equipment, which includes neoprene suits and boots, safety belts and helmets. Participants can bring their cameras and mobile phones which are stored in a safe waterproof bag.

The adventure begins at 11am with an exciting SUV ride to Brstanovica, the rafting starting point. This will be followed by a brief from the skipper, before commencing the first miles of the rafting experience at around 11:30am. Rafters put their rowing skills to the test, through the restless Vjernovic, Borovi, Varda, and Cegrlo rapids, before resting in the calm of many of the Tara River’s tranquil pools.

Here, we take a break to appreciate the unique landscape and waterfalls, have a photo break and even take a dip in the crystal clear (but cool!) waters.

We end at 4pm with a well-deserved lunch of hearty Montenegrin cuisine - homemade stew, trout, grilled chicken, lamb, or veal with potatoes, rice and side salads (vegetarian options available) – all washed down with homemade brandy!
