Overview of the tour

SKADAR LAKE KAYAKING

FULL DAY KAYAK RENTAL ON SKADAR LAKE

You can choose your own route and visit some of the popular islands and monasteries on the lake. Here are some ideas for your kayaking route:

  • Virpazar - Peninsula Lesendro - Monastery St. Nicolas - Virpazar
  • Virpazar - Peninsula Lesendro beach - Virpazar

Lesendro is an island and fortress on Skadar lake, located near the village Vranjina. The fortress was built in the 18th century. During the reign of Bishop Peter II Petrović-Njegoš, it served as a defense against Turkish attacks. Unfortunately, the Montenegrins weren’t successful and the Turks conquered the area and the island became known as Njegos’ sorrow. King Nikola Petrović-Njegoš wanted it back so badly that now there’s a saying in Montenegro: ‘to long for something, like the bishop longs for Lesendro.’ He tried to take it back several times and finally succeed in 1878. The fortes of Lesendro is a symbol of the long lasting struggle for independence.

Grmožur is the closest island to Virpazar. The fortification on this island was built by the Turks in 1843 and it was used as defensive complex. This little rocky island was known as prison for political opponents. Only one person escaped from the island so locals called it the ‘Montenegrin Alcatraz’.

Vranjina Monastery or St. Nikola's Monastery is a  Serbian Orthodox monastery in south-east of Vranjina island. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and is one of the oldest monasteries in Montenegro, and the oldest one on Skadar Lake dating back to 1233.
